Toy theater is a form of miniature theater that was a popular Victorian parlor entertainment.  Constructed of cardboard with magical paper sets and actors these small stages were the perfect tiny settings to reenact the most popular theatricals and operas of the period.  Newport artists Rupert Nesbitt and Rebecca Kelly hope to inspire interest in this lost form of performance art.  The theatrical division of their company, The Junkyard Studios, will perform an original production called First Snow

Join us to meet the authors of The Pendulum's Truth, Leigh Brown and Victoria Corliss. We will be co-hosting a unique holiday event of the exotic and entertaining kind on Thursday, December 6, from 3-6pm at the Jewel Box, 152 Mill Street, Newport & Saturday, December 15, from 12-4pm at Tiffany Peay Jewelry, 3851 Main Road, Tiverton Four Corners.

“Call it intuition or just good business,” laughs Corliss, “but we can’t think of a more fitting place to host a special signing of our new novel, The Pendulum’s Truth, than Tiffany’s boutique.

Her co-author Leigh Brown agrees, “The metaphysical energy and healing environment of the Jewel Box is the perfect backdrop for our story, and Tiffany’s exquisite handmade crystal creations are an absolute must-see.

Since she was a young girl, Ava Dell has been told that her intuitive sixth sense is a special gift she shares with her mother. It is a gift she never takes seriously until she is forced to make a fresh start after her mother’s death. Real estate agent Charlotte Boyer welcomes Ava to Wicks Falls, South Carolina with a mystical pendulum, and a warning to use it carefully.
Ava’s curiosity is piqued. She begins using the pendulum, relying on her intuition to guide her. Soon, customers are flocking to her newly opened coffee shop, The Tea Cozy, for Ava’s scones and her pendulum’s guidance. But when tragedy suddenly strikes, Ava, worried that she’ll be blamed, flees to her family’s cottage at Sully Shores. There she is forced to face the fact that some truths you can’t outrun, and to decide once and for all if her gift is truly worth the price.

The Jewel Box features a beautiful collection of 1950s aluminum trays and plates that Tiffany’s mother collected. The collection is for sale, each individually priced and all are under $100. It is displayed on the wall of the light-filled gallery in Newport. Many artisans are represented in the collection, Wendell August, Rodney Kent, Cromwell to name a few.

Aluminum Giftware became popular for wedding presents after World War II because metals were scarce and aluminum was less expensive than the cost of silver. It is also lightweight and aluminum rarely needs polishing.  The most valuable pieces to collect are those with the name of the company, their hallmark and sometimes a number, which is hand wrought or hammered into the back of the piece. Tiffany’s collection boasts many hand made pieces.  A small collection is also available in Tiverton.
